Crappies are a favorite game fish among many anglers. Caught in large lakes and smaller ponds alike, crappie put up one of the best fights around pound for pound. Various rigs are used to present bait and lures in an effort to entice these fish to strike. However, there are a few that are commonly used and have been proven to catch crappie on a regular basis.

Double Minnow Rig with Slip Bobber

The double minnow rig with a slip float consists of a main line with a dropper line attached several inches from the end. The end of the main line will typically have a 1 ounce or so weight attached. The dropper line will have a hook and minnow, as the name suggests, or another lure attached and will be free to move in the water with the current. A slip float is attached to the line and will move freely up to the point where a stop knot or bead is placed. The double minnow rig is similar to a surf fishing bottom search rig and may prove to be very successful in some crappie fishing situations.

Offset Stacked Rig

The offset stacked rig is one of the most commonly found crappie rigs for purchase in lake side tackle shops. This rig features two stand off wires that are attached to the main line. The standoffs are located a foot or so apart on the main line and both will have leaders of several inches extending from the end. A snap will typically be attached for securing a hook or lure. The main line will extend another foot or so below the bottom offset wire and will have a snap for attaching a weight. This rig allows for the presentation of two different types of baits at the same time. It is not uncommon to catch two crappie at the same time with this set up.

Basic Float Rig

The basic float rig is what you will commonly see a young angler fishing at a local pond. This rig consists of either a fixed or slip float with a stop, a weight on the line and a hook attached to the end of the line. The weight can be an egg slip weight with a bead and swivel stop or a crimp on weight. This is a great rig for presenting worms, corn, crappie bites and other suspension lures.
