Downhill Ski Resorts Near Brainerd, Minnesota
Brainerd is located in central Minnesota in the heart of the Minnesota lakes country along the Mississippi River. Over 460 lakes are within 25 miles of Brainerd. Its centrality makes it easy to stay in Brainerd and ski at both the northern resorts and the southern resorts, including the ones in the Minneapolis area two hours south. Cross-country skiing is also popular in the Brainerd lakes region.

Ski Gull

Ski Gull is the closest ski resort to Brainerd, just 17 miles northwest. The mountain is run as a community ski area and a non-profit 501(c)(3). Ski Gull has a 230-foot vertical drop and 100-percent snow making coverage. Two lifts serve 12 runs--of which 40 percent are beginner, 30 percent intermediate and 30 percent expert--and a terrain park. The mountain has night skiing and is open from December to mid-March.

Powder Ridge Ski Area

Powder Ridge Ski Area is south of Brainerd, near St. Cloud. The mountain has a 310-foot vertical drop and 60 acres of skiing. An average annual snowfall of 45 inches is supplemented by 100-percent snow making coverage. Six lifts with an uphill capacity of 7,400 skiers per hour carry riders to the 15 trails and one terrain park. Powder Ridge is open from mid-December to mid-March and offers night skiing every night.

Paul Bunyan Arboretum

The Paul Bunyan Arboretum has 12 kilometers of cross-country skiing available. The trails are maintained by the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club. Trails are designed for either skating or striding, and some are maintained for duel use. The Arboretum also has 5k of trails that are lit for night skiing. Skiing at the Arboretum requires a ski pass that is good for all the public cross country skiing in the Brainerd Lakes region (see resources).
