Turtleman - A Hidden Treasure
The northernmost end of Ambergis Caye has virtually untouched jungle and waters. An internationally renowned marine biologist, Greg Smith, also known as "Turtleman" rents out a bungalow on stilts above the water to adventurous travelers there. Greg's wife makes home-cooked meals, and guests have guaranteed educational eco-tours throughout their stay. They also arrange underwater encounters with the manatee. Captain Chocolate's heart for the Sea Cow
For an afternoon with a legend in Belize, join Captain Lionel "Chocolate" Heredia on a trip across the waters. A former professional fisherman who began running people out to see the manatees at their gathering place, he will inform and entertain his guests with stories of his journey to save the endangered Manatee.
A native to the area, and a star among Belize's cast of characters, Captain Chocolate has received a series of awards for his service to the community and the world at large in raising awareness about the need to protect this gentle giant.
Captain Chocolate has tours once or twice a week depending upon interest and weather. His solid mahogany skiff takes up to 14 people to the wildlife sanctuary that he was very instrumental in establishing. The tour goes from noon to 5 p.m. and sometimes includes a stop for snorkeling if there is time; weather permitting. Email is the best way to contact him: chocolateseashore@gmail.com. He's good at getting back to you.
