The waterfront location provides tourists with opportunities for fishing and boating at recreational areas, such as Indiana Beach. The bodies of water and forested areas that surround Monticello make this likely place to seek recreational activities and a cabin getaway.

Shady Cove Cabins

Shady Cove Cabins is within walking distance of Lake Shafer's eastern shore and less than 10 minutes driving distance from Crull Paint Horses, an equestrian center that offers facilities for horseback riding. Amenities at Shady Cove include access to Wi-Fi Internet in every cabin and docks for boating and fishing. Each of the six guest cabins at Shady Cove has a 20-inch cable TV, fully equipped kitchen and a porch area with chairs. Reservations for the weekend have to be made 24 hours in advance. Shady Cove Cabins, open during summer months, is less than 30 minutes driving distance from Delphi Canal, which has a two-mile hiking trail that goes through the former site of the Wabash & Erie Canal.

Summer Haven Resort

Summer Haven Resort is located on the shore of Lake Shafer, within walking distance from the Indiana Beach Amusement Resort. The amenities at Summer Haven include an outdoor swimming pool, sun deck overlooking Lake Shafer and facilities for fishing and boating. The cabins at Summer Haven Resort feature a fully furnished kitchen, as well as separate living and bedroom areas. Summer Haven Resort is open from May to September. There are also motel rooms and apartments on the resort's grounds. The Summer Haven Resort is approximately 30 miles from the Great Kankakee Swamp, which offers hiking trails and bird watching.

Blue Door Cottages

Blue Door Cottages takes reservations for summer and fall and is on the shore of Lake Shafer, less than 10 minutes driving distance from Tall Timbers Marina, where you can fish and boat. Amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, picnic area with barbecue grills and Wi-Fi Internet throughout the grounds. There is also an on-site restaurant, Shafer Yacht Club Cafe, that overlooks the water. Each of the cottages at Blue Door includes cable TV with a DVD player and a fully furnished kitchen. The largest bungalow sleeps up to 10; the smallest accommodates two. Some of the cabins have sofa beds. Blue Door is less than 25 minutes driving distance from France Park, which has over 15 miles of cycling trails.
