Emerson is located on the southern border of Manitoba, Canada, and northern North Dakota. The small city is named after a big name in the literary world: Ralph Waldo Emerson. The city prides itself on its proximity to some of the most beautiful wilderness in central Canada. Emerson is small and only has one motel within the city's limits, but there are nearly half a dozen motels and hotels within an hour's drive of downtown.

Maple Leaf Motel

Keystone Resort

The Keystone Resort is less than 30 minutes west of downtown Emerson. At Keystone, learn to fish in the nearby Fish Hatchery Interpretive Centre, bike or hike along the South Whiteshell Trail or admire the beautiful Little Indian Bay along the Hunt Lake Hiking Trail. Keystone Resort is in the town of West Hawk Lake at the periphery of the Canadian Shield. The lake, which is Manitoba's deepest at 377 feet, is actually a crater filled with water formed by a meteor strike over 100 million years ago. Granite hills surround part of the lake. Choose to stay in either a cabin or single room. Both accommodations are within walking distance of all the trails and outdoor amenities. All rooms are nonsmoking.

Altona Motor Inn

The Altona Motor Inn is northwest of Emerson and is an inexpensive option for travelers looking to visit one of central Canada's most well-known nature parks, the Spruce Woods Provincial Heritage Park. The Altona Motor Inn offers travelers single- and double-bed rooms starting at only $50 a night as of 2010. At the Spruce Woods Provincial Heritage Park, guests can boat, canoe, hike a number of trails or take up horseback riding. There are trails specifically for walking, some for horses and some for mountain bikes. One point of interest at the park is the Spirit Sands. This geological wonder was formed by the melting of glaciers during the Ice Age. The Devils Punch Bowl is a bowl-shaped sand formation 147 feet deep created by erosion by an underground stream. No matter your pleasure, you'll find an outdoors option for you at Spruce Woods.
