Cheap Romantic Getaways in Virginia

When you hear "Virginia is for lovers," you may find yourself asking if Virginia is for lovers on a budget. While hundreds of luxury mountain chalets and expensive bed and breakfasts make their home in Virginia, that doesn't mean a Virginia vacation needs to put you into debt. By utilizing vacation rental listings, campgrounds and smaller, family-owned bed and breakfasts, you can plan a cheap, romantic getaway in Virginia.

Chincoteague Island

Set in between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Chincoteague Island is Virginia's only resort island. Although most popular during the summer season, Chincoteague is a romantic getaway destination all year. From here, you can explore the national seashore, see wild ponies on the beach and spot hundreds of varieties of birds.

While many luxury bed and breakfasts in the area charge more than $200 per night, you can stay in the historic Miss Molly's Inn for less. Built in 1886, Miss Molly's Inn's claim to fame is that author of "Misty of Chincoteague," Marguerite Henry, stayed at the inn during her visit to the island. As of 2010, room rates start at $110 for three of the rooms (Beachcomber, Captain Jack's and the Yellow Room) and included free wireless Internet and a two-course breakfast. On site, you'll find a screened-in gazebo for reading or drinking your morning tea, and the inn has bikes for you to borrow.

Luray - Blue Ridge Mountains

If you prefer the mountains to the beach, consider taking your next romantic getaway in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Luray, a town set in the Shenandoah Valley, is a place where you can canoe, bike to area vineyards, attend old-fashioned county fairs, hike the Appalachians and visit historic buildings.

Staying in a romantic bed and breakfast can cost over $200 per night. However, if you stay in a small, family-run bed and breakfast like the Mayneview Inn, you can get better deals. Mayneview's nightly rates start at $105 in 2010, although a discount is offered for weeknights and multiple night stays. The inn is set on three acres in the Shenandoah Valley and was built in 1865. It served as a station for the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era, and it's just a five-minute drive from Luray Caverns. The inn has five unique rooms, three of which have fireplaces. There is also a four-person, outdoors hot tub.

Danville - Southern Viriginia

Enjoy hiking in rural southern Virginia near the Dan River. Danville is a great jump off point for mountain biking in Philip Wyatt State Park and going out to the racetrack. You can enjoy the Victorian architecture while staying in a romantic bed and breakfast or woodland cabin.

One affordable place suited for couples is Fall Creek Farm. This bed and breakfast offers romantic accommodation in an inn or in private log cabins. Cabins have fireplaces and two-person Jacuzzi tubs, and rooms also have Jacuzzi tubs, microwaves and mini fridges. Without breakfast, rates start at $75 per night in 2010.
