The Best Lightweight Tents for Backpacking

A backpacker's tent is his home away from home; it provides a bug- and rain-free shelter for people and gear. While a tent needs to be tough enough to outlast bad weather and sturdy enough to withstand brutal winds, it also needs to be light enough to go wherever a backpacker goes without weighing him down. The best lightweight tents for backpacking are made with material that's tough yet lightweight and have efficient geometry that maximizes space and sturdiness.

Nemo Morpho AR

Nemo's Morpho AR tent utilizes airbeams instead of poles to add sturdiness and save weight, comfortably giving two people 40 square feet of floor space and weatherproof durability in a package weighing less than 5 lbs. Backpacker.com reviewed the Morpho, citing its ease of setup and durability, saying that its "sleek profile easily shrugged off gusting winds that topped 50 mph on an 8,000-foot pass in Idaho's Hells Canyon country" and that after over a year of testing, the airbeams have yet to spring a leak.

Marmot Aura 2P

Weighing in at under 5 lbs., Marmot's Aura 2P tent provides plentiful headroom and 30 square feet of floorspace for up to two people, and its near-vertical walls make the interior seem even bigger. Dual-diameter poles and a sturdy frame geometry make the Aura a durable tent, as well. Outside.com's Frederick Reimers hailed the Aura as "downright spacious with two doors and two big vestibules." Reimers also noted the Aura's durability, noting that during testing, the Aura was "easily withstanding 50-mph winds without guylines."

Brooks-Range Rocket Tent

When looking for the lightest tent available, Brooks-Range's Rocket Tent is a good place to start. Utilizing ski poles and an avalanche probe, items that winter travelers generally carry, the Rocket Tent sleeps two people and weighs in at 1.6 lbs. For summer use, it comes with its own poles, bringing the weight up to a still-minimal 2.4 lbs. In addition to its light weight, Powdermag.com lauded the Rocket Tent's ability to remain "rock solid in the worst conditions," crediting its aerodynamic shape, the strength of its guyout system and its "incredibly strong and lightweight [and waterproof] CT3 fabric."
