Many anglers erect heated cabins on the ice, called ice houses. The Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza, a contest that attracts thousands of anglers, is held annually on Gull Lake. The event is typically held toward the end of January, About 20,000 ice fishing holes are pre-drilled for the event contestants.
