Environmental Damage Caused by Global Warming at Ski Resorts

Ski resorts around the world earn their profit from the environment, more specifically snowfall. Naturally, when global warming affects steady snowfall, concerns grow. Studies show that global warming will have long-lasting impacts on the environment, directly affecting ski resorts. Certain researchers go as far as predicting that some ski resorts will close in the next 50 years because of global warming. Some of the damage caused by global warming, though, is occurring now.

Low Snowfall

Snowfall has become increasingly unpredictable. Because of this problem, attributed in part to global warming, ski resorts have had to invest more in energy sources in order to create artificial snow. Low amounts of snowfall have, without doubts, a damaging effect on the environment. The natural water cycle in areas where ski resorts are located starts with snowfall on the mountains. Low amounts of snowfall can the impact water supply for the area throughout the year. Snowfall is important because once it melts, it directs to the rivers where it is later used as a major water source by ski resorts. In addition, the neighboring community depends on this water for agricultural purposes, among others, which contribute to the sustainability of ski resort businesses. In short, ski resort communities depend on snowfall, and it's a problem when there's a lack of it because of global warming.

Snow Melting Earlier in the Year

Because of global warming, snowfall is melting increasingly earlier in the year. As a result, ski resorts are forced to create artificial snow. Creating artificial snow is a costly endeavor, pushing ski resorts to adopt more renewable energy methods. Because ski resorts are presently experiencing the environmental damages caused by global warming, many have adopted more environmentally-friendly ways of running their businesses, such as running chairlifts and other equipment on wind and solar power, encouraging tourists to use public transport and sharing with guests information about global warming and its effects on the environment.

Flooding Rivers

Global warming can contribute to the flooding of rivers, which are some community's major source of water. Early and consistent snow melting can cause rivers to flood. Also, early snow melting--in addition to rain--causes rivers to flood. Flooding can result in mass wasting, or the movement of sediments, soil, or rock in mountains. Naturally, this is a concern for ski resorts trying to protect their guests' safety. Flooded rivers can also cause damage to nearby streams and even kill wildlife.
