Global Positioning Systems are useful tools for fishing, particularly if you're trying out new spots. There are many features to consider when shopping for a handheld GPS, including whether you want it to have mapping capability, if you need a built-in or external antenna, the battery life you expect from your device, and if you want to pay a little extra for fish-finding capabilities. The handheld GPS you choose should be waterproof and durable, and there are several models popular with fishermen.

Garmin Oregon 400t

The Garmin Oregon 400t is "user-friendly and intuitive," according to Outside Magazine, and it rates the model as one of the best for outdoor enthusiasts. This unit is particularly useful for fishermen because of its 3-inch touch-screen keyboard that allows for easy navigation. The waterproof Garmin Oregon 400t is preloaded with inland lake and river maps that include shoreline, depth contours and port plans. The model has 850MB of memory with SD card capability, and it has a battery life of up to 16 hours. The Garmin Oregon 400t is a medium-range model that retails for $400 to $500 as of March 2010.
