Southwest Virginia comprises of all the counties located in the Appalachian Plateau, a mountainous region that provides opportunities for hiking on the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail, which runs from northern Georgia to Maine. This region of Virginia is also home to Hungry Mother State Park, which offers opportunities for fishing and swimming, as well as camping facilities. Southwest Virginia's bucolic setting creates an ideal background for those seeking a bed and breakfast retreat.

Whispering Waters Bed and Breakfast is located near Wardell, Virginia, and is approximately five miles north of Jefferson National Forest. It is also less than a 10-minute drive from Breaks Interstate Park, a 60-mile recreational area that runs through the 1,600-feet deep canyon of Russell Fork River. The park provides opportunities for hiking and canoeing activities. Features at Whispering Waters include a picnic area with barbecue grill, on-site pond and a telescope for stargazing. A complimentary gourmet breakfast is also provided. Guestrooms feature fresh flowers, antique furniture and some rooms also have a whirlpool tub and fireplace. The bed and breakfast is also near the eight-mile Spencer Hollow cycling trail in the Jefferson National Forest.

Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast is situated in the heart of Rocky Mount, Virginia, and offers amenities such as a gourmet breakfast prepared by the inn's owners, gardens with paths for nature walks, Wi-Fi Internet throughout the building and a guest parlor. Claiborne House is within a 20-minutes drive of Smith Mountain Lake Park. The River Garden Bed and Breakfast rests on the banks of the Holston River and is less than a 10-minute drive from Abingdon, Virginia. Its waterfront location provides guests with opportunities for fishing and boating activities. River Garden has a log cabin appearance and there are three rooms available. Each of the guestrooms feature a deck that overlooks the river and a whirlpool tub. Microwaves and refrigerators are available upon request. River Garden is near off-site recreational areas, including the 34-mile Virginia Creeper Trail, a cycling path that runs from Abingdon to the Virginia-North Carolina border, and Whitetop Laurel Creek, which offers fishing opportunities.
