Busboys and Poets
Busboys and Poets is not a strict vegetarian restaurant, but Urbanspoon website readers still voted it one of the 10 best vegetarian restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. There are three locations close to Alexandria, two in Washington and one in Arlington, Virginia. The menu includes hand-tossed pizzas, paninis, soups, burgers (vegan and traditional), appetizers like vegan bruschetta and chicken quesadillas and dinner entrees like vegetarian spinach and pesto lasagna and vegan beans and red rice. Lunch and dinner prices range from $6.95 to $15.95 in 2010. Breakfast includes omelets and vegan egg wraps. Brunch is served on weekends and holidays until 3 p.m.

Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant
Winner of several "best vegetarian" awards, Sunflower's two area locations strive to serve tasty, vegetarian and vegan food for lunch and dinner every day except Saturday. Diners can choose items such as spring rolls, miso soup, seaweed salad, noodles, pastas and grilled vegetable panini. The restaurant also serves sushi and rice dishes. For dessert, try egg-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, honey-free treats like organic pumpkin tofu pie for $4.

Praised in magazines and guides such as "National Geographic Traveler" and "Epicurious", this popular D.C. eatery isn't strictly vegetarian, but offerings such as falafel and crispy fries are. Visitors can choose the topping or sauce they want. Falafel sandwiches are made to order. Amsterdam Falafelshop is open every day.
