The Best Reasonable Price Surf Fishing Rods

Most surf anglers will attest to the amount of wear and tear their equipment is put through each season. Surf gear must be durable and well made to survive the harsh elements of saltwater surf-fishing. Surf rods often command a high price for their innovation and components designed to take the abuses of saltwater fishing. However, there are reasonably priced rods on the market with the features needed to take on repeated exposure to surf-fishing.

Alvey AL550

Alvey, recognized by many for its fishing reels, also offers a range of rods for the surf angler. Economically priced, the AL line is an efficient choice for the economically minded fisherman. But the AL550 may be of particular interest to many as it is a 9-foot medium-action rod suitable for casting weights up to 1 1/2 oz. into the surf. The pound-test-line rating is from 8- to 15-pound test. The AL550 surf rod features a fiberglass rod blank and graphite reel seat. Foam grips and aluminum oxide guides are also included to add comfort and durability to the rod. The rod has a suggested retail price of about $35, as of March 2010.

Cabela's Whuppin' Sticks

The Whuppin' Stick by Cabela's might be considered a hybrid rod. A combination of E and C glass (fiberglass compounds) are used to produce the blanks for these rods. Available in lengths from 8 to 15 feet, other features include graphite reel seats, stainless line guides with ceramic inserts and EVA foam grips. A skeleton design lower grip, often found in higher-price rods, is incorporated into the design to help reduce weight and balance the rod. The manufacturers suggested retail, depending on length, is between $60 and $70, as of March 2010.

Daiwa Beefstick BFSF902MHRS

The Beefstick SF line of surf rods by Daiwa is designed to be a tough and reliable rod for the surf angler. As the entire line of rods are a bargain with a suggested retail price beginning at around $25, as of March 2010, the model BFSF902MHRS is among the best deals in the lineup. This rod is a 9-foot medium-heavy surf rod capable of handling 12- to 30-pound monofilament test line. To further reinforce the Beefstick image, the 9-foot rod is rated at handling 1 to 6 oz. weights. All Beefstick rods feature a fiberglass blank with composite reel seats. An EVA foam grip is provided for comfort both fore and aft of the reel seat.
