If you are on a tight budget for your vacation in Paris, save cash and stay at a two-star hotel. Unlike the United States where hotel ratings are arbitrary, the French government strictly evaluates all hotels and rates them according to amenities. Most Paris two-star hotels are clean, comfortable, and located near major tourist attractions. Two-star hotels may have fans instead of air-conditioning, bare-bone bathrooms, bedrooms with minimal furnishings, and stairs instead of elevators. If you plan to spend your time exploring Paris instead of staying in your room, sleep in a two-star Paris hotel.

Hotel de Saint Germain

Centrally located on the Left Bank in chic St. Germain des Pres, the two-star Hotel de Saint Germain is a 10-minute walk to the Seine River, where you can jog the pavements and cobblestones along the river or for take a boat tour of Paris. The Luxembourg Garden is a five-minute walk away. The garden's lush paths are popular among runners. The 30 rooms are basic, but contain amenities rare to two-star hotels such as free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and mini-bars. For families, the Hotel de Saint Germain contains five family rooms with one large bed, two twin beds, and two bathrooms.

Hotel Malar

A few blocks from the Eiffel Tower, the reasonably priced Hotel Malar is a rare find in an area known for expensive hotel rooms. The 22 rooms are decorated in a Mediterranean shabby-chic style and overlook a flowered courtyard. A favorite of backpackers, the hotel has an extensive library of European travel guides, and postcards from satisfied travelers from around the world. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but the hotel provides fans for hot, sunny days. A handicapped-accessible family room is available on the ground floor by request. A few minutes from the Hotel Malar, you can jog in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, run along the Seine River and spy the Statue of Liberty's sister, or rent a bike to pedal around Paris.

Hotel Aurore Montmartre

If you would like to walk the winding streets that Picasso, Monet, and Toulouse-Latrec found inspirational, stay at the Hotel Aurore Montmartre. Montmartre is the most elevated area of Paris, so you can get a work-out by running up the steep hill to the steps of Sacre Cour Cathedral. Your reward will be a stunning view over the Paris skyline. Next, visit the Place du Tetre, the artist's square in Paris, and pose for a portrait by one of the many open-air painters who set up shop in the square. Take the incline or walk downhill to your hotel for a night of entertainment at the Moulin Rouge. Like most two-star hotels, the rooms at the Hotel Aurore Montmartre are basic, but cheery with yellow walls and colorful bedspreads. The bathrooms are modern with a lively black and white checkerboard theme. Amenities are limited, but the hotel staff will help you procure anything that you need.
