Many travelers who think of hostels think of really cheap dives--single rooms crammed with bunk beds over a noisy bar that only young kids could tolerate. Actually the best hostels are completely different, and many of the best hostels in the United States provide welcome accommodation for travelers of all ages. When traveling through the United States, there are many great hostels to choose from.

AYH Ranch Hostel

The AYH Ranch Hostel on Vashon Island will be a favorite for nature lovers who like to explore off the beaten path. Vashon Island is located in Washington's Puget Sound. This hostel is only 30 miles from Seattle but is surrounded by 100 acres of nature reserve on the island. Housing options include cabins, tepees, barn or "lavender house." This hostel is open from May to Sept. 30, although the lavender house is open all year-round.

The Green Tortoise Hostel

The Green Tortoise Hostel is a one-of-a-kind hostel that is famous for its big green neon sign and location in the heart of Seattle. This hostel includes modern amenities such as free wired Internet plug-ins and Wi-Fi Internet access, free breakfast daily and even free dinner three times a week. This hostel is located right across the street from Pike's Market in downtown Seattle, and this place really sets itself apart as having multiple private bathrooms. Each bunk has its own fan and reading light.

White Mountains Hostel

The White Mountains Hostel in Conway, N.H., was listed by America's Best & Top Ten website as one of the 10 best hostels for backpackers in the country. It sits right on a trail that runs all the way across the country from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Ore., and it offers some freebies to cyclists going across the country. Clean linens are provided, and this is a smoke-free and alcohol-free hostel that provides an open kitchen for guests to use. This hostel was made from a turn-of-the-century farmhouse, giving it a unique aesthetic.
