Columbus, Ohio is predominantly known for having a large German population. However, there is also a significant Russian population--so much so that in the past few years, several restaurants featuring traditional Russian cuisine have opened. Several traditionally "German" restaurants have also added Russian dishes to their menus.

Hawa Russia--pronounced "Nasha Rossiyah"-- is a new-ish traditional Eastern European restaurant located in the Northland neighborhood of Columbus. The Columbus Foodie gave Hawa Russia a favorable review in June 2008. In particular, the reviewer recommends the Meat Pirozhki; Borscht; Hawa Russia salad, which includes cucumbers, radishes and onions in sour cream; and Siberian Pelmeni dumplings, which are filled with pork and beef. The restaurant does not have a website.

The menu offers other traditional Russian dishes, such as Chicken Tabaca, Beef Stroganoff, Salad Oliv'e and Vareniki, which are Russian perogies. The menu also has multiple vegetarian options.

The restaurant is large and good for banquets or parties. Currently, they are only open on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. for dinner and dancing with live music. Banquet prices are fixed and ala carte items range between $5 and $15, per dish.

The atmosphere is reported to be vibrant and family-oriented, with animated wait staff and brightly colored traditional artwork in the main dining room.

Katzinger's, which has been open in the Columbus German Village since 1984, is a popular destination for The Ohio State students and faculty. In 2010, the readers of the Columbus Alive voted the deli to have the "Best Sandwich" in Columbus. And, notably, former President Bill Clinton visited Katzinger's during his presidency and built his own special sandwich--the #59 President Bill's Day at-the Deli, which includes hot corned beef, Swiss cheese and hot mustard on pumpernickel. It remains on the menu.

The deli also features traditional "Jewish" and Russian sandwiches, such as the Reuben, chopped liver and pastrami on rye. It also offers dinners and entrees with brisket, turkey and fish options.

Katzinger's is not a Kosher deli and offers pork options. The restaurant is also vegetarian friendly.

Other menu items of note include chicken matzo ball soup, Redskin potato salad, Kosher dill pickles, marinated or creamed herring, potato latkes and knishes, noodle kugel and cheese blintzes.

Katzinger's is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is available for catering and takeout.

Portions are huge, so go prepared to eat. Groceries and deli items are also available.
