Ski Lodges in the Southern United States

In the United States, most ski lodges are located in snowy regions of the country such as New England, the Rocky Mountains of the West, the Wasatch range in Utah or the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. But numerous lodges also can be found in the Southern part of the country. Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee all feature ski lodges. North Carolina has six ski and snowboarding resorts within its borders. Although the American South is not known for its winter sports, outdoor enthusiasts will be surprised to find ample opportunities for skiing and snowboarding.

The Top of the Beech Inn

Located in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, the Top of the Beech Inn is a rustic ski lodge that's only a quarter mile from Ski Beech, a popular Southern resort. The rooms at the inn feature a country decor with quilted bedspreads and green headboards. Additionally, 12 of the rooms offer views of the Beech Mountain slopes.

After a long day of skiing or snowboarding, you can relax in the cozy Moose Lounge or enjoy the stunning views on the observation deck at the inn. To get to the Top of the Beech Inn, you can fly into Hickory Regional Airport (50 miles from the lodge) or to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (93 miles away).

There is free shuttle to the area's 37 ski slopes. If you prefer more private accommodations, the Canaan Valley Resort also offers 23 cabins and cottages, which can sleep between four to 12 people. A year-round campground is available as well.

Guests of the lodge have the choice of staying in a cozy studio room, a one-bedroom unit that sleeps four or a two-bedroom unit that can sleep up to six people.

All of the rooms feature amenities such as cable TV and a VCR. The lodge also has a sauna and exercise room.
