Tours of Granada, Nicaragua

Eco-tourism and active vacationers are flocking to central American countries such as Nicaragua. Granada, Nicaragua is the countries oldest city a colonial city founded in the 1500s. The city is nearby lake Cocibolca, and the pacific coast. A tour of this area includes activities such as kayaking among the hundreds of small, unspoiled islands, exploring a crater lake or visiting an active volcano.

Granada City and Isletes

Central America.com offers two tours of Granada. The Granada City tour operates daily. The tour includes local monuments and government buildings, historical churches and the marketplace. The tour is given by horse drawn carriage. The tour includes lunch, and starts at $25 per person with parties of four or more. The second tour offered by Central America.com is the Granada and Isleta tour. It combines the city tour with a boat tour of Las Isletas. Las Isletas is an archipelago of 365 small volcanic islands situated inside Cocibolca Lake, about five miles from Granada. The islands are full of plants and wildlife, including one island with a monkey colony. This tour starts at $50 per person with parties of four or more. Tours are offered in Spanish or English, or German or French if requested. Both tours include all entrance fees into the monuments. The advertised rates are valid until October 31, 2010.

The Taste of Nicaragua

The Taste of Nicaragua is a four day, three night tour that includes the city and volcanic islands. This tour includes a two night stay in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua and one night in Granada. It includes meals, entrance fees and cultural tours of Granada, Leon and Masaya. It includes a shopping tour of the marketplace and a ceramic village near Masaya. It also includes visiting active volcanoes with tours of the Volcán Masaya National Park, the fumorolic fields of Volcán Telica and the Apoyo Crater Lake. It also includes a private boat tour of the island archipelago called Las Isletas. Las Isletas are known for all types of wildlife and water birds, and most of the islands are private. Access is limited to tours and local fishermen. Custom tours can also be created for individual needs.

The White Villages

Solentiname Tours offers a unique visit to the White Villages (Pueblos Blancos). This full day tour visits a group of artist colonies near Granada. Stops include Diria, Diriomo, which are small towns with tended gardens and white houses. Next is Catarina and San Juan de los Platos, artist colonies along a crater above Laguna Apoyo. The final stop is Niquinohomo featuring bamboo crafts and ceramics.
