Bordered on the east by Jordan and on the west by West Bank and Israel, the Dead Sea is famed for being amongst the saltiest bodies of water, with a 33.7 percent salinity level, making it 8.6 times saltier than the ocean, and thus giving the waters unusually high buoyancy. It is also the lowest surface elevation on earth at 422 meters below sea level. A historic region mentioned in all three monotheistic religious scriptures, it was also the world's first health resort from Herod the Great's times and still attracts a lot of visitors for salt and mineral therapy today.
