Maine Vacations in August

Maine offers visitors and residents a wide array of outdoors activities to choose from. Hiking, camping, biking and water activities are all excellent ways to explore all that the state has to offer. Because Maine typically experiences cooler weather than less northern parts of the United States, August is the prime time for a Maine vacation; temperatures in August are relatively warm, but not too humid.

Vinalhaven

Vinalhaven is a small island, accessible only by ferry, located 12 miles off of the coast of Rockland. The island is inhabited by a year-round population of just 1200, many of whom make a living as fishermen. Vinalhaven is an increasingly popular destination for hiking and camping enthusiasts, who visit the island in the summer months for some outdoor adventures. Cars are allowed on the island, but many visitors choose instead to bring over or rent bicycles. The hilly terrain allows for some challenging, but rewarding, bike rides. Canoes, kayaks and other water vehicles can also be rented on the island. In addition, Vinalhaven is home to several natural water quarries, which make for some enjoyable swims.

Kennebunkport

Originally settled as a shipping and fishing town in the 1600s, Kennebunkport has become a popular destination for summer vacationers. Many historic mansions in the area have undergone restoration and are now run as inns and hotels. Kennebunkport visitors can charter captained fishing boats or can rent kayaks and canoes. The area also has many different guided walking tours, which also offer the option of riding on old fashioned streetcars, during which visitors can learn about Kennebunkport's rich history.

Moosehead Lake Area

Travel 90 minutes northwest of Bangor to Moosehead Lake and you'll find an ideal spot for an outdoor adventure vacation. Moosehead Lake residents and visitors enjoy mountain biking, bird watching and moose watching, to name a few of the activities readily available in the area. In addition, hiking trails are available for hikers of all skill and experience levels, including along a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Guests can stay at one of the area's fine inns, or can camp along the edge of the lake.

Bar Harbor

Surrounded by the Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor offers visitors a number of outdoors activities to enjoy. Biking trails through the Acadia National Park provide beginners and experts alike with new and exciting bike rides. Walking tours through downtown allow visitors to explore Bar Harbor, while learning about the history of the area from knowledgeable guides. Whale-watching boat tours, rock climbing instruction and personalized bird-watching hikes are also available.
