Once an isolated farming community and transportation hub for commodities such as cotton, grain and cattle, Killeen, Texas, is located in the center of the state and is a residential community that surrounds the military base of Fort Hood. Weekend recreation opportunities--including hiking, fishing, backpacking and mountain biking--abound in the state parks that surround the area.

Mother Neff State Park

The first park within the Texas State Park System, Mother Neff State Park offers visitors 259 acres of hiking, camping and picnicking facilities.

Overnight camping is available at sites that include both primitive and upgraded (water and electricity), and there are shower facilities available. The park is open seven days a week, year-round, and reservations are accepted for overnight camping sites.

Longhorn Cavern State Park

Limestone caves are the big draw at Longhorn Cavern State Park in Burnet. Guides lead 90-minute tours of Longhorn Cavern, a massive cave where confederates once made gun powder and where legend has it that an outlaw once hid $2 million in cash.

The cavern tours are operated by a concessionaire, but the 645-acre park area surrounding the cave offers 2 miles of hiking trails and picnic areas available for day use.
