Lahaina, once known as Lele, means "relentless sun" in Hawaiian. That should give you an idea of the weather forecast before visiting this historic whaling village. Kaanapali, in Lahaina, is one of the finest three-mile stretches of beaches and resorts in America. Enjoy the area's relentless sun, as well as the golden sand, lush gardens, great golf and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean as it stretches along the western shore of the island of Maui. But be sure to save time for the award-winning cuisine.

Hula Grill Kaanapali

Among other accolades, Hula Grill Kaanapali was named "Best Fish House on the Islands" by Honolulu Magazine and recognized for "Best Ambience" six years in a row in a readers' poll for Maui News. This former plantation home from the 1930s, known for its Hawaiian regional cuisine, sits right on Kaanapali Beach. Take your meals and tropical drinks at the informal-as-it-sounds Barefoot Bar, or make reservations for the dining room. Steaks, prime rib and pasta are available along with the extensive seafood offering and panoramic ocean views. Specialties of the house include Sashimi, a fresh Hawaiian ahi with wasabi and shoyu. A kids' menu is available at the outdoor bar and in the dining room.

Kimo's

The entire family is warmly welcome at this beach-facing restaurant on Front Street. Select the dining room or take your meal facing the water under an umbrella on the romantic lanai. Weekends out here feature live Hawaiian music and tropical cocktails. Lobster and steak, prime ribs and fresh fish are on the menu. Save room for hula pie, a macadamia ice cream with chocolate fudge topping over a chocolate cookie crust. Kimo's is open for lunch, dinner and evening drinks.

Lahaina Grill

Named a Fodor's Choice for Hawaii in 2009 and a multiple-year award winner for "Best Maui Restaurant" by Honolulu Magazine, the Lahaina Grill is just off bustling Front Street. This self-described "contemporary bistro" serves seafood, meat, pasta and vegetarian dishes under a pressed tin ceiling. The wine cellar features some 350 labels. Among the menu highlights are the Cake Walk, a sampler of Kona lobster crab cake, seared Ahi cake and sweet Louisiana rock shrimp cake. Select the bar or dining room or book the Chef's Table for parties. Lahaina Grill recommends reservations.

Son'z Maui at Swan Court

This is the original of several quality restaurants found at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort in the Kaanapali Beach area. You'll enjoy contemporary Hawaiian and European cuisine featuring local seafood, chops, lobster and steaks, along with locally grown produce offered in an ocean-facing setting. Watch white and black swans bathing under a cascading waterfall as you sample the Surfing Goat Cheese ravioli appetizer. For your entrée, consider the Hawaiian opakapaka piccata, made with artichokes, caperberries, Lisbon lemon and sweet-potato hash browns. Son'z Maui opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reservations are necessary in the evening.
