Lakes and Rivers Near Riverside, California

Lakes and Rivers Near Riverside, California
Although much of the area around Riverside, California, has succumbed to development, several national forests and recreation areas remain within a short drive of the city. Within these parks are several lakes and rivers that visitors can enjoy. Riverside's name comes from its proximity to the Santa Ana river, although much of this river has been dammed and levied to control flooding.

Lake Perris Recreational Area

According to Google Maps, Lake Perris Recreational Area is about 20 miles south east of Riverside, CA. While the park is conveniently close to Riverside, it is also rather compact and developed. The lake has two main beaches called Moreno and Perris. There, you can swim and take small boats out onto the water or stroll along the beach. A nine mile paved trail loops around the circumference of the lake; hikers also share this trail with bicyclists. A second unpaved trail winds up to nearby Terri Peak where hikers can take in a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Rock climbers can head to Big Rock, a 180 foot high granite cliff. The climb has 34 established routes; most are beginner to intermediate, but it's possible to enjoy some advanced climbing by switching between routes.

Lake Elsinore

Covering more than 3,000 acres, Lake Elsinore is one of the largest bodies of freshwater in Southern California. The lake has ample opportunities for kayaking and canoeing;the lake is also open to power boating and jet skis. All boats require users to buy a day pass for the lake. A nearby hiking trail goes for three miles along the water. Although not technically part of Lake Elsinore, a section of the Cleveland National Forest borders the lake. Hiking trails through the forest's mountains can provide views of the nearby lake.

San Bernadino National Forest

Located just to the north of Riverside is the San Bernadino National Forest. This is where the Santa Ana river has its source, and it's also the location for Lake Arrowhead and Silverwood Lake, two large freshwater bodies. Lake Arrowhead tends to be more developed and the lake is privately owned, which means access is limited except to those staying in houses near the water. Silverwood Lake is a state recreation area and completely open to the public. Both of these lakes are within close proximity of the Pacific Crest Trail, in addition to several other trails throughout the area.
