Hesston, Kansas, became a developing city when the Missouri Pacific railroad was being built in the area. Hesston then became one of the strategic receiving and shipping points for the farmers of Harvey County. Today the town is home to the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains, which Hesston College owns and where the flora of Kansas is grown and maintained. Hesston is home to several restaurants.

Lincoln Perk

Lincoln Perk is a specialty coffee shop that serves more than just java. This specialty coffee shop bakes its own pastries. Some of the establishment's baked specialties include cinnamon rolls, quiche, sausage biscuit sandwiches and muffins. Lincoln Perk also serves breakfast and light lunch meals: bran muffins with low-fat yogurt and fruit parfaits, soups, beef bierocks, a variety of wraps, and chicken-salad croissants. Lincoln Perk, which is the only place Harvey County residents can get homemade gelato, has free wireless Internet access and drive-through service.

The Water's Edge Restaurant

The Water's Edge is a family-style restaurant that features a daily buffet. The buffet typically has two meats and a salad bar. Thursday evenings have special themes at the Water's Edge. The Thursday Night Specials run from 5 to 7 p.m. Sundays feature a brunch that runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Water's Edge has private dining halls for celebrations and also offers catering services for occasions such as weddings, retirement parties and other celebrations.

Montana Mike's Steakhouse

A bit beyond Hesston is a place worth the extra eight-mile drive. Sating big appetites is what Montana Mike's aims for. Located in Newton, this full-service restaurant serves naturally aged steaks that are hand-cut and grilled according to the customer's preference. Favorites are not limited to the Mike's 22-ounce sirloin, a Mile High 16-ounce ribeye or a delicious porterhouse; Montana Mike's also serves chicken fried steak, ribs and catfish. Appetizers include fried mushrooms, potato boats and hand-breaded onion rings. Salads, pastas and burgers are also available, and Montana Mike's has seasonal items. The restaurant also has a full bar.
