Anchorage Light Speed Planet Walk

This walk, a scale model of the solar system, was designed by Eli Menaker, a 2004 graduate of Service High School in Anchorage. The speed of light is a factor of the design, and moving from planet to planet at a fairly relaxed walking pace matches the rate of speed that light moves from the sun to the planets. The sun, the favored starting point, is located at 5th Avenue and G Street. From there, it takes about eight minutes to walk along 5th Avenue and arrive at Earth, just as it would light from the sun. The path continues along 5th Avenue and the Coastal Trail to arrive at Pluto, a total walking time of about 5-1/2 hours. Groups hold special events centered around the walk, which is normally free.
