City Island's main strip, City Island Avenue, offers a variety of restaurants, and some of them are inexpensive. City Island is less than two miles long and lies at the edge of New York City in the Bronx surrounded by the waters of the Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay, giving the island a rich nautical history. Though there are no public beaches on the island, the city is still appealing to visitors. Local cyclists ride the bike paths to and from the island, and visitors can wander through City Island's nautical museum.

City Island Diner

Start your morning off right with a hearty breakfast, which is served from 6 a.m. until noon, at this simple American diner. Lunch and dinner is also served here, with most entrees costing under $10. The waitstaff at City Island Diner serves up humor along with the restaurant's meals, ensuring that you enjoy your dining experience. Be aware that there might be long wait times in the morning.

Johnny's Famous Reef Restaurant

For very casual dining there is the cafeteria-style Johnny's Famous Reef Restaurant on the tip of City Island. Fried seafood reigns here, but they do offer a raw bar, steamed clams and lobster and some broiled versions of their fried fish. For landlubbers, Johnny's offers burgers, fried frog legs and chicken fingers. While most menu items are in the $5 to $15 range, for the frog legs and little neck clams on the half shell, the menu prices do go as high as $22 for fried lobster tails. Clam chowder is popular here, which costs $3.50. After you've gone through the line and have picked up your food, pass up the inside seating options for a picnic table outside. Here, you'll have ample views of the ocean, beach and New York City skyline as you dine.
