Lake Powhatan is located in the midst of the Pisgah National Forest, a vast 501,691-acre property. Four trail loops for hiking and mountain biking go around the lake, through a forest mixed of deciduous and conifer trees. Fishing is permitted in the lake where anglers can catch brook, brown and rainbow trout. While boats are not allowed on the lake, a swimming area is provided. The closest major city to Lake Powhatan is Asheville, a 12-mile drive. The Asheville area is home to many cabins that are available for vacation rentals.

For those looking for a luxurious stay, Asheville Cottages Resort offers 10 upscale vacation cabins. Amenities include private back decks with hot tub and grill, gas fireplaces, large flat-panel TVs with satellite channels, beds with built-in speakers and mp3 dock, washer and dryer and fully equipped kitchens. All cabins are located on 14 private acres and are close to the attractions of Asheville, as well as Lake Powhatan and the Pisgah National Forest. Cabins are designed for two people, but many can accommodate up to four or five with the use of the pull-out couches. Pets are not allowed.

Asheville Cabins Cottages and More offers Wolf Branch Cabin, an isolated mountain retreat close to all the conveniences of downtown Asheville. There is a gas fireplace and an outdoor hot tub with a wooded view. A queen-sized bed is located in a loft-area under a skylight, providing views of the stars. Other amenities of the cabin include a gas grill, fully equipped kitchen, sun room, library, satellite TV and radio, washer, dryer and hair dryer. With advanced reservations, guests can arrange for an on-site massage. A two-night minimum is required. Pets are welcome.

Asheville Rose

The Asheville Rose Cabin offers a 1,000-square-foot space with a fully equipped kitchen, washer, dryer, charcoal grill, hot tub and large deck. All towels, blankets and linens are provided. The cabin can sleep up to four people in two queen-sized beds. Located in a densely wooded area, the cabin has a large, manicured lawn perfect for playing catch or having a picnic. Lake Powhatan is a 20-minute drive from the cabin. Pets are not allowed. The cabin is a nonsmoking facility.
