The five-story Blackwater Falls in West Virginia is one of the state's most photographed sites and get its name from the tannic acid that gives the water a "black" appearance. The area around the falls offers activities for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. There's hiking, biking, birding, swimming, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, airboarding, cross-country skiing, sledding and ice skating. Visitors can find honeymoon, family and pet-friendly cabins nearby.

Blackwater Falls State Park

You can't get any closer to the falls than this. Blackwater Falls State Park rents 26 vacation cabins year-round that are about a mile from the park lodge and convenient to the falls. The fully furnished cabins are situated in a wooded area and feature stone fireplaces, forced-air furnaces and a bath with shower. Three pet-friendly cabins are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Cabins must be rented for at least a week during the summer season but are available by the day or weekend at other times of the year. Depending on the season, the park offers 10 miles of trails for cross-country skiing, a tow rope and quarter-mile long hill for sledding, 20 miles of hiking trails, boating at Pendleton Lake, trout fishing in the Blackwater River, swimming at the lodge and a variety of nature programs.
