The Original Pancake House
The Original Pancake House is a breakfast chain that has been around since 1953. Its signature dish is apple pancakes, smothered with cooked apples and cinnamon sugar, then baked and topped with a cinnamon glaze. Try the cherry Kijafa crepe, made with cherries and sweet Danish cherry wine. For those who prefer savory to sweet, try the eggs Florentine, toasted English muffin topped with spinach, two poached eggs and homemade hollandaise sauce and Spanish paprika. Prices are reasonable. As of March 2010, most dishes are under $10.

Mark's Kitchen
Located in the progressive suburb of Takoma Park is Mark's Kitchen. The owner, Mark Choe, is Asian American and serves up a blend of East meets West dishes, along with a large selection of vegetarian dishes. The shiitake mushroom omelet is a hit with all the regulars. For the vegetarian in the house, try Mark's spinach tofu breakfast, two spinach tofu cakes, two eggs, home fries with grits and an English muffin. Rates are affordable. As of March 2010, the most expensive dish was the smoked salmon breakfast for $8.95.

Flaxella
With a name like Flaxella, the food clearly involves flax seeds. Self-described as a gourmet, health and holistic restaurant, Flaxella serves a creative choice of dishes. Start with a cup of flax mocha, roasted flax with coffee, cocoa and steamed milk. Or order the Oaticcino, a blend of oats with steamed milk. The Dakota roll-up uses roasted flax seed spread on whole wheat flat bread with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and parsley. As of March 2010, most breakfast choices are between $2.55 and $3.75.
