Budget Hotels on the Upper West Side of Manhattan

New York City is home to the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Broadway, Ground Zero and Madison Avenue; a great place for an adventurer who likes to walk. On the Upper West Side of Manhattan, you can find Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center and the neighborhood of Harlem. What is harder to find in Manhattan is budget hotels in a decent neighborhood. Most hotel rates start at $200 and run upwards of $1,000 per night. But there are some gems hidden in the Upper West Side with rates less than $200 per night.

Royal Park Hotel

Rooms at the Royal Park Hotel start at $59 as of March 2010, making this one of the best deals on the Upper West Side. Amenities include non-smoking rooms upon request, roll-away beds for an additional $20, Internet kiosk in the lobby, 24 hour check-in service and a concierge. Some of the rooms have a shared bathroom, so be sure to ask for an en suite bathroom if you don't want to share. Within walking distance are a multitude of restaurants including Mamma Mexico, Indus Valley Indian Cuisine, Turquaz Mediterranean Turkish Cuisine, Carmine's Italian, and Docks Seafood & Steaks.

Excelsior Hotel

At the Excelsior Hotel, as of March 2010, rooms start at $179 per night. But for a four-star hotel in Manhattan, $179 is a steal. Decorated with a French motif and overlooking the American Museum of Natural History, the hotel offers continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a library and a health club. The hotel's restaurant, eighty one, headed by Chef Ed Brown, serves a classic American menu.

Westside YMCA

One of the best-kept secrets in many major cities around the world are the rooms available at the YMCA. Located right at Central Park West and walking distance to the Lincoln Center, the Westside YMCA is a coveted place for an affordable room. Guest rooms can be booked up for months in advance so make a reservation sooner rather than later if you know you're planning to be in New York. Room rates, as of March 2010, are approximately $100 per night but can be cheaper depending on availability. You will have access to all of the YMCA facilities including the swimming pools, basketball courts and computer rooms.
