Chesapeake Bay is shared by Virginia and Maryland. The bay has many opportunities for all sorts of fishing. There is deep water, in-shore and fly-fishing to be had around the bay. Fly-fishing for blues and stripers, as well as in-shore sport species, around the Chesapeake Bay waters is possible. There are many guides and outfitters who offer fly-fishing charters and trips to the bay. Be sure to have a Maryland and Virginia fishing license when angling in the bay.

Flies and Equipment

Fly choice plays a key role between having a successful day fishing or not.

According to the staff blog at "Fishing Chesapeake Bay," the waters around Chesapeake Bay are prime for striped bass and blues. It is possible to fly fish for these species at any time of year, with fall being an especially common time to go for them. During fall, it is recommended to sight-cast to the surface-feeding stripers and bluefish. When fishing for stripers high in the water column, a collateral benefit is that there are usually trout in the area making for incidental strikes. When the weather turns cold, the species will head to the warm-water outflows from local power plants. Follow the fish there during the winter months for quality hits and fly fishing.
