Ice fishing in South Dakota promises many healthy and plentiful fishing holes, as well as several lakes to fish in. Walleye, northern pike and yellow perch remain among the most popular catches in this region. During the day, yellow perch is the catch of choice. At night, it's walleyes.

Bird Down Lodge

Bird Down Lodge package prices include lakeside lodging on Lake Oahe, meals and all the equipment needed to go ice fishing, including a license to fish. Bird Down Lodge also provides transportation. In addition to ice fishing, you can blow off some steam at the Spring Lake State Public Shooting Area, less than five miles northwest. Thirty-three miles west, Indian Creek Recreation Area offers skiing and other outdoor activities. Additionally, if you prefer skiing, 19 miles west you will also find trails at Miller's Lodge.

Pelican Lake

At Pelican Lake, you can camp, ice fish and enjoy other outdoor activities without ever having to leave the park. With campsites on the waterfront, you can literally crawl out from your tent and onto the ice to begin your fishing expedition of the day. The park offers horseback riding, cross-country skiing and about five miles of marked trails. It's also the home of the state fish and game department. However, if you still feel like exploring, Sandy Shore Recreation Area lies 528 feet north. If you're looking to get warmed up, Bramble Park Zoo awaits you less than one mile northwest and Codington County Historical Museum is less than a half-mile southeast.

Lake Alvin

Lake Alvin in Canton stays open year-round, offering anglers plenty of walleye, northern pike and bullheads to catch. You can also add crappie, perch and catfish to your line. The park focuses its attention on water recreation, including ice fishing. Nearby attractions include The Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls, less than nine miles northwest of Lake Alvin. A half-mile east of the lake sits Ninemile Creek State Shooting Area. About two miles northeast is Blood Run Native American Historical Site.
