The Best Bike Wheels

Bike wheels do a lot more than support bike tires--they provide shock absorption, rolling efficiency, as well, and they need to do all that while staying as light as possible. While a wheel's emphasis may vary depending on the type bike, the most important aspects of wheels stay the same: The best bike wheels are light, efficient rollers that are tough enough to put up with the rigors of road or mountain bike rides.

Halo SAS Pro

Given the nature of their terrain, mountain bikers need the most durable bike wheel available, and Halo's SAS Pro wheel is a solid option. With double eyelets, Halo's Combat Evolved SAS rim and a double system joint, the SAS Pro is built to last. Mountain Biking UK's Guy Kesteven called the SAS Pro "bombproof benchmark rims" and cited the Pro rear hub and SAS rim for making the SAS Pro wheel "close to indestructible."

Easton EC 90 SL

At 2 3/4 lbs., Easton's EC 90 SL carbon wheels are a lightweight, durable option for cyclocross riders. In a Gear of the Day review, Bicycling.com's Matt Allyn noted that the EC 90 SL's "stayed straight and true over a rough season of racing," noting that the wheel's double-butted spokes made the tires durable, while the carbon rims and ceramic hubs keep the weight down.

Williams Cycling Wheel System 38

For road bikers who want a lightweight wheel, the Williams Cycling Wheel System 38 wheels weigh less than 3 lbs., giving cyclists a quick ride. Bikeradar.com's James Huang noted the Wheel System 38's ride, saying its carbon rims provided "a fast spin-up thanks to the low weight and buttery ride quality." Huang also noted the wheels absorb shock well, also, saying its "cushy feel made it slightly easier to stay in the saddle and power through rough sections" when tested on a cyclocross bike.
