Still, it can also be said that you need not spend $10,000 to satisfy your hunger for a quality bike. Here are three excellent options that also provide quality craftsmanship.

Jamis Ventura Elite

Jamis Bicycles offers road biking enthusiasts a premier bike for the price with its Ventura Elite. The bike is designed for the recreational cyclist who wants to put in a lot of miles and still be comfortable. The Ventura Elite features a full carbon composite fork, and Shimano Ultegra derailleurs and shift levers. Specifications include a 7005 triple-butted main frame, an Alex wheel set, Vittoria Rubino tires, an FSA Gossamer crankset, a Tektro brake set, a Ritchey Pro 4 Axis stem and a Selle San Marco Ponza saddle. The weight is listed at 17.75 lbs.. As of 2010, the bike goes for $1,850.

Cyclocross riders looking for the best single-speed design for their dollar would be wise to consider the Kona Major 1. First-time racers seeking a worthy entry-level cross bike will benefit most from the Major 1. The bike features a frame created from rarely used scandium, a carbon fork and an FSA MegaExo bottom bracket. Specifications include a Shimano 18T freewheel, Tektro R200A brake levers, Formula front and rear hubs, Alex R390 rims, Continental Speed King cross tires and a WTB Rocket V Comp OE saddle. Vassago Jabber Wockey

Vassago's Jabber Wockey offers off-road lovers a finely-designed bike for a very competitive price. Riders will find this bike well-suited for trailing in all conditions. Features include a Vassago-built 4130 chromoly frame and unusual geometry, even when compared to other 29er frames. Specifically, the frame's longer wheel base and steeper seat tube angle. Specifications include a 68mm shell bottom bracket, 135mm of rear spacing and 29-inch tires. A rigid, or suspension, fork with 80mm of travel is offered. Frame weights are 4.6, 4.9 and 5.2 lbs. No overall weight is listed on the manufacturer's website. As of 2010, the bike is priced at $479 for the frame only.
