Bike riders heading for the trails can increase their overall efficiency by using the best pedals and footwear available. In particular, the wrong shoes can mean hot spots and blisters, while the wrong pedals might give too much lateral play---the last thing you want while navigating technical trails. Whether riding singletrack cross-country or going all mountain, there are bike shoes and pedals to consider.

Egg Beaters and MX401s

The design of Crankbrother's Egg Beater Four Ti// pedals has cross-country riding in mind. Features include a mud-shedding design allowing debris to pass through rather than clog the pedal. Specifications include a weight of 167g per pair, titanium body and wings, 300 series stainless steel spring and a release angle of 15 or 20 degrees. Maximum recommended rider weight is 185 pounds.

Lake Cycling offers riders the best option for a shoe to match the quality of Eggbeater pedals. The MX 401 features a kangaroo leather and mesh upper, tongue liner, a cleated, carbon fiber sole, heal lock for greater foot stability and a side-mounted lacing system. Specifications include an average weight of 340g.

Quartz Carbon Ti and Octane SL IIs

Look Cycle's Quartz Carbon Ti pedals are an all-around trailing component for everything from weekend rides to competition. Features include an over-sized titanium axle and a carbon fiber body. Specifications include an average weight of 120g per pedal (278g per pair with mounting bolts and cleats), plus or minus three degrees of angular play and 1.5mm of lateral play.

Pearl Izumi has designed the Octane SL II: a shoe with elements of their Octane Road model coupled with an off-road sole to create a model that is an ideal counterpart to the Quartz Carbon Ti pedals. Features include a carbon fiber sole, one-piece upper, and a power-focusing heel cup. Specifications include an average weight of 335g, a P.R.O. Insole with EVA, molded TPU toe cap and Rubthane lug tips.

Aerial Pros and Cobras

Made by NS Bikes, Aerial Pro Pedals are for punishing BMX riding. These clipless pedals offer standout features such as a sealed bearing and bushing system, concave low profile platform and removable 3mm high pins. Specifications include a weight of 390g, and pedals created solely from 6061 T6 Alloy.

Orchid Footwear's Cobra model offers BMX riders ample protection and padding regardless of the style of riding. Features include leather and suede uppers, an internal EVA midsole and a 400 NBS Rubber outsole. Orchid created the Cobra model for professional BMX rider Matt Beringer. No weight listing is on the manufacturer's website.
