The Best Bicycle Racks

If you're going to take your bike with you on a road trip, a good bike rack is a necessity. Having the right bike rack allows riders to transport their bikes with ease and security, and the best ones do so while taking up a minimal amount of space. The best bike racks mount easily, fit a wide range of bikes securely, and are tough enough to handle the rigors of road travel.

Thule 963 Spare Me Bike Rack

For vehicles with a rear-mounted spare tire, which prevents the use of a trunk or hitch-mounted rack, Thule's 963 Spare Me bike rack mounts directly on the spare tire. Frame cradles and rubber straps securely hold two bikes to the frame and prevent collision. CarBikeRacks.com hailed the Spare Me's ease of setup as well as its security, saying that "the bikes did not shake or move at all" on the road.

Yakima Backswing 4

With its multiple-jointed arms and its mobility, Yakima's Backswing 4 hitch-mounted bike rack is the model of versatility. Outside.com said that it "accommodates a wide variety of bikes," and called it "very secure and easy to use." It can carry up to four bikes securely, thanks to its frame cradles and strap-securing system. When not in use, the bike's joints allow it to swing out of the way to allow access to the rear of the vehicle, and it lies flush with the vehicle when not holding any bikes.

Hollywood Racks E3 Express Rack

For cyclists whose vehicles don't have a hitch or rear-mounted spare tire, Hollywood Racks' E3 Express Rack utilizes a versatile adjustable hub and multiple strap system to allow the rack to fit securely on just about any kind of vehicle. Amazon's best-selling car bike rack, the E3 Express features bike separators with rubber straps to allow easy bike mounting while keeping bikes separate in transit.
