The Best Fishing Downriggers

Downriggers are effective fishing tools that can be used for freshwater or saltwater fishing. The downrigger uses a weight with a quick release to control the depth of your line. The weight is attached to a cable that is controlled manually or electronically from the boat. Manual downriggers are functional and easily controlled, but electronic versions work quickly and allow you to make adjustments by cranking the spool by hand. Downriggers can also be used to take water temperatures, and cameras can be mounted on the weight to view your lures, the fish and the underwater scenery.

Walker Downriggers

The Walker Coho Electric Downrigger uses a single arm and comes with 200 feet of 195 pound cable. The electric downrigger has an adjustable rod holder attached and a line counter to measure your depth at all times. The motor has a 200-foot-per-minute retrieve speed for making quick adjustments and getting the cable out of the water while the fish is being landed. The downrigger has been well-reviewed by Cabela's.com customers and is valued for its compact design and fast electric retrieve. Canon also manufactures the Digi Troll IV, which has three adjustable retrieve speeds and five depth settings. The model also has a jig function that will move your lure up and down at a predetermined time and length interval.

Penn Downriggers

Penn manufactures the Fathom Master Downrigger in a 24-inch boom model and a 48-inch boom model. The downriggers use an electric switch control for raising and lowering the cable, and both models have a 200-yard cable capacity. The downriggers can also be used with programmed depth settings for running multiple lines off a single cable. The downriggers are designed to be used in freshwater or saltwater and are built with a corrosion-resistant housing to prevent rusting.

Scotty Downriggers

The 1106 Powerpack is one of the most popular Scotty downriggers, according to Fish Alaska Magazine. The model uses a 60-inch telescoping arm for extra reach, and the arm collapses to 36 inches for storage. The unit comes with an 8 lb. ball weight, two releases and a swivel base. Scotty also makes the 24-inch 1099 Depthpower downrigger for saltwater use. The downrigger is fast at 235 feet per minute and can be controlled with single-button use. The easy control method allows you to keep your hands free for fighting fish, and the unit is corrosion resistant for use in saltwater.
