You'll find Maryland's eastern shore wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. The eastern shore is a popular vacation destination for Marylanders every summer, and every weekend thousands of cars cram the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in an effort to cross to destinations like Ocean City, Assateague Island and Tuckahoe State Park. You'll find plenty of fun outdoor activities your whole family can enjoy at any of these destinations.

Assateague Island National Seashore

This national park comprises a huge barrier island, Assateague Island, and its many miles of Atlantic Coastline. The park can be accessed from Berlin, Maryland, to the north or from Chincoteague, Virginia, to the south. It offers 4 miles of cycling trails, canoe and kayak rentals, swimming and surf fishing. You can also collect unoccupied seashells, with a limit of 1 gallon or less. In addition to all these typical park activities, Assateague Island is famous for being home to nearly 300 wild horses. Other wildlife include horseshoe crabs, ghost crabs, snow geese (seasonal), white-tailed deer, sika deer and numerous bird, reptile and amphibian species.

Tuckahoe State Park

Tuckahoe State Park offers a highly diverse terrain for your family to explore. You can hike, bike or ride horseback on more than 20 miles of wooded, hilly trails. The park features a 60-acre lake with canoe and kayak hire on the spot. You can rent a canoe and paddle across the lake to Tuckahoe Creek, to navigate a winding, marshy waterway filled with birdlife, frogs and turtles. Camping facilities include powered sites, unpowered sites and air-conditioned cabins. Tuckahoe State Park also features a 500-acre arboretum, high-ropes course and informational Scales and Tails displays.

Ocean City Boardwalk

Ocean City is Maryland's premier beach-going destination. In addition to clean beaches and wild waves, family can enjoy Ocean City's boardwalk and its myriad attractions and activities. The boardwalk features several arcades filled with video game machines, a merry-go-round and indoor haunted house. At the southernmost end of the boardwalk, you'll find two amusement parks, Jolly Roger at the Pier and Trimper's Rides and Amusements. These parks feature full theme park-style rides such as a roller coaster, bumper cars, scrambler and Ferris wheel.
