Stamford, Connecticut, is the first major city that drivers pass through after entering the state on Interstate 95 from New York. If you're hungry after a long drive, the city is a good stopping point, with diverse dining options. Skip the fast food at the rest areas and try one of the local diners or restaurants. Whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, something will be open, no matter the time of day or night.

Bedford Street Diner

The Bedford Street Diner opened in 2007 as a family-run business in the heart of downtown Stamford. All cooking is done with oil that is trans-fat free. Diner menus are usually quite large, and Bedford Street is no exception. There are more than a dozen grilled sandwiches to choose from, such as Laura's Thanksgiving: fresh turkey, cranberry sauce and melted Swiss cheese on grilled multi-grain bread. The menu also features burgers, wraps, soup, salads and numerous breakfast items.

Duo

With its stark yet sophisticated décor, Duo serves European cuisine and sushi. Try an entrée like snapper filet with stir-fried scallops, asparagus and shitake mushrooms, or the duck leg confit cannelloni, with porcini mushrooms and duck breast in an orange red wine concentrate. If you're looking for lighter options, consider one of the many signature sushi rolls, like the Hot Mama: eel, scallops, crab, avocado and rice cracker wrapped in soybean paper.
