The Best Canteens

Canteens are portable containers that hold water and other liquids. They've been around for generations and have evolved from the hollowed out gourds and animal skins of our ancestors to the military and recreational designs seen today. The BPA health scare has motivated consumers to switch from polycarbonate water bottles to food grade stainless steel and even glass, but BPA-free plastics are also available. Here are the top choices of the Water Bottles Reviewed, Consumer Search and Gardenaut websites.

Good Life

Good Life entered the market with a plan to correct the shortcomings of other metal bottles and its food-grade stainless steel bottle is tough, yet attractive. Water Bottles Reviewed was so impressed it awarded it a gold medal, with an 84 out of 100 rating. According to Good Life, the vacuum-sealed cap and double-walled construction of the stainless steel canteens keeps cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot for up to 24 hours. Good Life also stands behind its products with a limited lifetime warranty.

Kor One

As a top choice of Consumer Search and a winner of accolades from "National Geographic Adventure," "Outside" magazine and the Gizmodo website, the Kor One is turning heads. This stylish canteen is made of BPA-free Tritan copolyester and its wide threadless opening is big enough for ice cubes. The Kor One's innovative hinged top, with an integrated handle, can be opened with only one hand and its rubberized base helps eliminate spills.

ThinkSport

This Gardenaut top pick is a double-walled, stainless steel canteen that's vacuum sealed to preserve the temperature of its contents. A dual-opening lid provides wide and small mouth options and a mesh guard keeps ice inside when you drink. ThinkSport's clever design is also evident in this bottle's hourglass shape, which makes it easy to hold. It's hard to beat the ergonomics, but ThinkSport's construction is also attractive and its bottles can take a lot of abuse.

Polar Bottle

Polar Bottle is the low-price leader, but it's good enough to be a Consumer Search runner-up and Gardenaut top pick. Its double-walled, foil-lined, polypropylene canteen is durable, lightweight and a good insulator. It's also BPA- and Phthalate-free, so you can use it without worrying about your health. The bottle's squeezable, hourglass shape is easy to grip and it fits standard bike cages. Polar promises that your drinks will stay cold twice as long, but its price is the same as a regular canteen. That makes this bottle a good bang for the buck.
