Attractions in Gillette, Wyoming

Located in northeast Wyoming, Gillette is a small city just west of the Black Hills. Though the city itself is small, there are several attractions in the area that make a visit to Gillette worthwhile. The main points of interest here include national parks, outdoor recreation, history and the arts.

Powder River Symphony Orchestra

Conducted by Steven Trinkle (as of 2010), the Powder River Symphony Orchestra is the leading representative of the performing arts in Gillette. The group regularly performs concerts in various genres, including chamber and classical music. In addition to staging concerts, the symphony sponsors professional development workshops for teachers and provides free lessons to schoolchildren. As of 2010, ticket prices were $15 for adults and children under the age of 18 were admitted for free.

Campbell County Parks & Recreation Department

The Campbell County Parks and Recreation Department offers a range of recreational facilities for all ages. Facilities include a fitness center, three basketball courts, a running track and an indoor swimming pool with a diving board and a water slide. The center also has racquetball and squash courts, a weight room and a locker room with a sauna. During the winter, the department maintains an ice skating rink where the public can take lessons. During the warmer months, residents can use baseball and soccer fields throughout the city, which are also maintained by the department of parks and recreation.

Bell Nob Golf Course

The Bell Nob Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course just outside of Gillette's city center. The course is run by the Campbell County Parks and Recreation Department and is managed by golf pro, Kirk Wasson. In addition to the 18-hole public course, there is a 9-hole executive course. The Bell Nob Golf Course is open from spring to fall, weather permitting.

Thunder Basin National Grassland

The Thunder Basin National Grassland is located 45 minutes south of Gillette in Douglas, Wyoming. The site is a prime location for outdoor recreation, especially hiking, fishing and seasonal hunting. Camping is also a popular activity in the area. If you want to know more about the area's ecology and wildlife inhabitants, Thunder Basin is the perfect day trip to take from Gillette. The grasslands are open year-round.
