On top of numerous Chinese and Indian restaurants, the town of Carlisle features a handful of Thai restaurants. Some are authentic, while others take a fusion approach, mixing the best of world's cuisines. Located in Cumbria in the north of England, Carlisle is an old city whose tumultuous history is filled with clashes of cultures--from Romans to Celts. That tradition continues to play out in another cultural arena: cuisine.

Pattaya Thai

Pattaya Thai has an unassuming exterior, easily missed if you don't know what you're looking for. It is located in a blocky, brick building with very little in the way of signs to point you there. Once inside, patrons find a menu that features both traditional Thai and Chinese cuisine.

Ruen Thai Restaurant

Near the center of Carlisle is Ruen Thai, a restaurant that dresses for the part. The interior features wood paneling and authentic Thai decorations and ceramics, sprinkled with colorful flowers. On top of that, the servers dress in traditional Thai garb. The menu provides concise explanations, including notations for which food is spicy. Ruen Thai shares a building with a pub; the restaurant is on the second floor.

The Circle

Though The Circle is a playground for fusion cooking, Thai cuisine is the bedrock of the restaurant. This is another restaurant tucked in an arcade and possessing an inconspicuous facade (there is no sign). You really have to know what you're looking for to find it. However, it is only a few minutes' walk from the train station, so it is easy to get to. The Circle is both a bar and restaurant.
