Bernie's Southern Bistro
Though Bernie's Southern Bistro is located in the up-and-coming Alberta Arts District of Portland, you'll feel like you've walked into a Southern cafeteria as soon as you smell the food coming out of the kitchen. Here, the menu is divided into a "Meat and Two" format, where you get to choose a meat dish, such as the delectable blackened catfish or creole shellfish stew, and then match it with two sides from a selection of more than ten. Bernie's fills up fast, so a reservation is recommended for dinner.

Miss Delta
Every Wednesday starting at 7 p.m., Miss Delta on Mississippi Avenue has an offer for those without much in the way of funds to get their share of tasty Southern cooking. It's called "Sing For Your Supper," and it's exactly what it sounds like: performers get on stage, entertain the room, and get a meal. And what a meal it is, as the menu includes favorites such as a seasonal meatloaf, chicken fried steak, jambalaya and cheese grits. Miss Delta also offers a happy hour each day from 5 to 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to close, where you can get sides for a few bucks off and locally brewed pints for three bucks.

Po'Shines Cafe De La Soul
Owned by a local church, Po'Shines Cafe De La Soul is run by at-risk youth and young adults who need vocational training as part of the Teach Me to Fish organization. Still, the good deeds done at Po'Shines aren't the main reason people drive up to this North Portland eatery--they come for the barbecued ribs, the po' boys, and the hush puppies which come as a standard side for every meal.
