Portland, Oregon, attracts thousands of outdoor enthusiasts each year. The city has more than 10,000 acres of parks and natural areas and numerous urban forests. Nearby, the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood National Forest allow Portland's residents and visitors to escape the bustle of urban life. The city also is home to many restaurants that use fresh, local ingredients and serve home-style food.

Three Degrees

Located at the RiverPlace Hotel on the banks the Willamette River, Three Degrees serves high-end comfort food prepared with local vegetables, meats and seafoods. Dinner entrees include spit-roasted chicken with rapini and caramelized mashed potatoes, Dr. Pepper-braised short ribs and grilled white prawns with black-and-white pasta.

The extensive wine list features more than 100 selections of white, red, white and sparkling wines, most of which are produced by Pacific Northwest wineries.The restaurant offers an outdoor terrace where diners can watch as jet boats and steamers cruise down the historic Willamette. Three Degrees is also open for breakfast and lunch and serves brunch every Saturday and Sunday.

From Grandma's pies to Ipswich clams, this modern yet cozy restaurant showcases the cuisines of regions across the United States. Smaller plates include andouille-and-rice fritters with a Creole dipping sauce, salt-roasted Detroit beets and Yukon potato white-cheddar puffs. Diners can choose from an array of entrees, such as shrimp and grits, home-style meatloaf and molasses-barbecued beef brisket. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner and has a full bar.

Veritable Quandary

Since 1971, this Pearl District bistro along Portland's Waterfront has been a mainstay for lunch, dinner and brunch. The intimate restaurant serves American and European-inspired dishes such as duck confit, quail with marsala-soaked plums and petrale sole with dungeness crab. Six-course tasting menus with wine pairings are offered as well.

The full dessert menu features a variety of house-made ice creams, including peanut-brittle, chocolate cherry, roasted hazelnut and pistachio, along with creme brulee, truffles and chocolate souffle.

Voodoo Doughnut

Before a morning hike or rafting trip down the Columbia River, visitors can load up on carbs and protein with Voodoo Doughnut's infamous maple-glazed long john, which is topped with three slices of hickory-smoked bacon. This popular eatery serves many other offbeat doughnuts, including the Memphis Mafia (glazed with chocolate chips, banana and peanut butter) and the Dirty Snowball (chocolate cake doughnut with pink marshmallow topping and a surprise filling). Voodoo Doughnut has a second location at 1501 NE Davis.
