The Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia, borders Sydney's metropolitan area, starting at the west side of the Nepean River and extending westward as far as Cox's River. The beautiful terrain consists of deep gorges and sandstone plateaus, with eucalyptus trees in higher elevations and temperate rain forests, swamps and button grass reeds in the valleys. Visitors to the area can enjoy nature hikes over thousands of square miles or go spelunking in Jenolan Caves southwest of Katoomba.
