The Mississippi River is the biggest river system in the U.S. and offers a full range of outdoor activities along its 2,000-mile course from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Water activities on the river include canoeing, kayaking, fishing and sailing, while walking, jogging and biking are often available along the shore. Various cities in the 10 states it touches offer special events, such as the annual triathlon-duathlon held every May in Galena, Illinois.

Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront Hotel

Formerly the Radisson Riverfront, the renamed hotel with 470 rooms underwent a $9.2-million renovation to refresh the facilities. The hotel is close to the Xcel Energy Center, a multi-purpose entertainment and sports venue that opened in 2000, the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and to the RiverCentre Convention hall.
