If you're an outdoor enthusiast, a vacation in Washington State is a dream come true. Surround yourself with the majesty of Mount St. Helens, or amble along the Columbia River Basin. Hiking, biking, kayaking and camping opportunities abound, as do the opportunities to observe wildlife, such as whales, off the coast. There are so many activities that you may have to make Washington State an annual destination.

The San Juan Islands are a group of 175 islands, located about 60-90 minutes off the coast of Washington State. The four main island destinations are San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island and Shaw Island. The Washington State Ferry takes you and your car to this beautiful location, allowing you to watch for animals in their natural habitat along the way.

REI Adventures offers a 6-day San Juan Multisport Vacation that includes kayaking through Griffin Bay, biking through Orcas Island, hiking Mt. Finlayson, camping and watching bald eagles, porpoise, orcas and other wildlife.

As of early 2010, the trip costs $1,899 for REI members and $2,200 for non-members. Accommodations include a furnished tent-cabin for two nights, island camping one night, and lodge or cottage accommodations for two nights.

Included in your fees are all meals, lodging, equipment, bikes and helmets and camping fees. Space tends to be limited on these trips so it's a good idea to plan ahead.
