Toronto, arguably the cultural capital of Canada, is a cosmopolitan city, but it's also a stone's throw from the dense wilderness of northern Ontario. As a base for outdoor excursions, Toronto offers a contrast to the back country, with unparalleled nightlife and dining opportunities. Adventurers with a taste for Japanese barbecue, or teppanyaki, can choose between several popular restaurants to satisfy their hunger.

A Taste of Japan

Located on Woodbine Avenue in Markham, A Taste of Japan offers more than just barbecue. The sushi and seafood (some of it live) on the menu give the restaurant an air of authenticity, and the decor is tastefully atmospheric. Teppanyaki is a specialty, and the beef, chicken and seafood barbecue dishes consistently win positive reviews from diners.

Katsura

The upscale Katsura is in the Westin Prince Hotel in North York, and its luxurious surroundings make it one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in Toronto. Dishes, including a selection of sushi and sashimi, are presented in the aesthetically ambitious kaiseki style, and Katsura's focus is on the dining experience as much as on the food itself. The teppanyaki menu is basic but appealing, and the restaurant's teppanyaki tables turn the preparation of the barbecue into table-side theater.

Yamato

Teppanyaki is also the specialty of Yamato in Yorkville and preparation of the dishes at the table is a fundamental part of the barbecue fun. An extensive teppanyaki menu includes chicken and seafood dishes, as well as entrees made with premium Kobe beef. Children's barbecue dishes are also available, and an assortment of sushi selections rounds out the extensive menu.
