The right tire can make a surprisingly big difference in the ride of your mountain bike. For mountain bike riders intent on riding trails in wet conditions, the right tire can mean the difference between excellent cornering and flying over the handlebars. Whether they are for XC, free riding, enduro or downhill biking, these tires get the job done.

Panaracer TrailRaker UST

Panaracer's TrailRaker UST was designed specifically with the interminably wet United Kingdom winter in mind. Features include a widely-spaced, mud-clearing tread, side knobs for cornering stability and tubeless technology for better rolling resistance and fewer pinch flats. UST stands for Universal Standard for Tubeless. Specifications include a 26 by 2.10 tire size, a weight of 780 g, an aramid bead and 66 threads per inch. The TrailRaker UST is best suited for XC riding.

Bontrager Big Earl SSC

Bontrager's Big Earl SSC is a wide tire designed to be used at low tire pressure in wet conditions. Though low pressure usually means less stability, the Big Earl SSC compensates for this by including Stability Control Casing (SSC), a butyl stiffener that runs along the sidewalls. Other features include the use of Gum-Bi compound for stiffness. Specifications include a wire bead, dual rim diameter, 60 threads per inch and size options of 26 by 2.5 or 2.7. This model is best if used for XC riding.

Continental Rain King DH

Continental's Rain King DH is designed with black diamond downhill and manic free-riding in mind. This is a good choice for wet and lightly muddy terrain. Features include three plies, a widely-spaced tread and Black Chili Compound, which allows for greater wet weather traction. Specifications include a tire size of 26 by 2.5, an overall weight of 950 g and total threads per inch of 180.
