Kayaking in Oregon involves plenty of touring options, including whitewater trips on the Rogue River, calm island estuaries in the Willamette River and the lakes at Mt. Hood. Paddlers can enjoy native birds and wildlife along the way. Many kayaking outfitters and rental services in Oregon offer tours, including some that come with kayaking lessons.

Ross Island, Bachelor Island, San Juan Islands and Chinook Landing

Alder Creek offers kayaking tours in Portland and Bend, Oregon. Sea kayaking tours include those to Ross Island, Bachelor Island, the San Juan Islands and Chinook Landing. The Ross Island tour covers 3 nautical miles around the island. Ross Island is the main island in the Willamette River in Portland. Paddlers can see some of the 50 species of birds, including ospreys, herons and eagles. The Bachelor Island tour lasts 6 hours and winds through the Columbia River Water Trail. A variety of wildlife can be seen on this 12-mile tour. Paddlers also pass through water traveled by native tribes and explorers Lewis and Clark. The San Juan Islands tour is 4 days and includes camping and the exploration of local islands. The Chinook Landing tour is 6 hours and starts at Chinook Landing on the Columbia River and ends at the Jantzen Beach store dock. The trip is 10 miles long and includes a lunch break.

Rogue River

Whitewater Warehouse offers kayaking tours on the Rogue River, using either inflatable or hard-shell kayaks. The Rogue River offers nearly 100 rapids and more than 43 miles of scenic river canyon trails. The tour takes place on a protected section of the river, where the touring service only allows up to 120 kayakers each day. The river is know for being a "pool and drop river," meaning kayakers must maneuver through rapids, but end up in quiet and calmer pools.

Mt. Hood Lakes

Mt. Hood Adventures is an outfitter guide service that provides kayak delivery and tours in the waterways of Mt. Hood National Forest. There are guided group tours, private tours and Friday night sunset paddling. Tours include the waterways of Clear Lake and Trillium Lake or a hike-and-kayak combination. This is an adventurous option for those who like to camp, hike and kayak. Campers can pitch a tent, have a kayak delivered and enjoy the hiking and kayaking tour offered by Mt. Hood Adventure. Clear Lake and Trillium Lake paddlers can enjoy scenic views of Mt. Hood and occasional bald eagle sightings. The hike-and-kayak combo tour starts with a hike at the Mt. Hood Adventure Shop, goes through historic trails on the mountain and proceeds to Trillium Lake, where the kayaking trip begins.
